We want to know, how did we do?

Real Veterans, Real Experiences

When I got out of the service, I immediately got three service-connected disabilities at 0%, but I didn't really understand what that meant. So, from that point forward, I kind of ignored those 3 ailments.

Over the next 23 years, I filed four more times. The first three submissions - everything was denied. I was frustrated and confused - what the doctors told me verbally wasn't matching what I was seeing in the VA's decision letters.

Through the proper VA channels, I requested my medical records twice with no response. Finally, I went to a veteran-friendly senator and got my own records in 10 days. That's when I realized the problem - what the doctor said to me verbally was not what was written in my records.

On my fifth "try" - claim filing, I took a completely different approach. Instead of relying on what I thought I remembered, I pulled everything directly from my medical records and built my case around the documented evidence.

Following this strategy, I went from 0% to 100% Permanent & Total in less than a year. After 23 years of denials, I finally cracked the code. That's when I knew I had cracked the code and needed to help other veterans - because if it worked for me after all those failures, it can work for anyone.

The difference wasn't luck or a better VSO - it was understanding how to use your own medical records to tell your story the way the VA needs to hear it.

My story is similar to that of many other military women who have experienced sexual assault. I reached out to Sarge, seeking guidance from someone I could trust regarding my military sexual trauma (MST) incident. She provided me with the support and tools I needed to pursue my case.

Sarge offered to consult with me via Facebook through a women's veterans' group to which we both belonged.

I felt overwhelmed and didn't know where to start, but she took the time to listen without judgment, helping me understand the process at my own pace.

Although I ultimately decided I wasn't mentally ready to move forward, Sarge fully supported that decision. Her expertise and willingness to help brought me a sense of peace I had never experienced before, as it was the first time I felt truly heard.

Sarge genuinely believes that veterans who have been violated need a voice, and she is a champion who is ready to help, guide, and understand the trauma we’ve endured. She also instilled hope in me, assuring me that when I am ready, I will have the support I need to fight the good fight.

I heard about Sarge at work; they called her the 'veteran guru'. So, I walked up to her in the hallway one day and said, 'Hey, I hear you're the veteran guru.' Best conversation I ever started.

I'd been struggling with increasing my disability for years. My previous VSO basically told me I had no hope of getting an increase - after dealing with that crap, I was ready to give up.

I served as a rescue swimmer in the Coast Guard and dealt with a lot of TERA environments during my training. Let me tell you, dealing with the VA was harder than it needed to be. But Sarge got it. She understood what I went through and knew exactly how to present my case.

Working with Sarge was easy - no BS, no runaround, just straight talk and solid advice that actually worked. She knows the VA system inside and out and had answers for everything. Made the whole claim process make sense. When everyone else told me to give up, Sarge helped me fight.

Finally found someone who actually gives a damn about helping veterans.

"I must say, Julie, I am blown away with the work you've put into this project. Thank you for all you're doing. I honestly feel like this is going to happen. ❤️ ️"

About the Project:  Brian is working to establish America's First Veterans Service Dog Memorial to honor the four-legged heroes who serve alongside our veterans. Inspired by his beloved service dog, Chewy, Brian launched a campaign to create a lasting tribute at the Maryland Veterans Museum that will honor all veteran service dogs who have served faithfully alongside their handlers. Sarge stepped in to provide strategic support, advocacy guidance, and help amplify Brian's mission to ensure these loyal companions receive the recognition they deserve.

Sarge's Role: Beyond VA disability claims, Sarge advocates for veteran causes that matter. She's helping Brian navigate the complexities of memorial fundraising, connecting with corporate partners, and building community support for this meaningful tribute to service dogs who've given their all for our veterans.
